PR Newswire has reported that ZTE will launch ZTE Axon 20 5G, World’s first mass produced 5G smartphone with ‘under display camera’ featureon September 1, 2020. The new ZTE Axon smartphone will initially be launched solely in China. Interestingly, several other smartphone manufacturers besides ZTE have also been rumoured to be working on the ‘under display camera’ feature.
What is the big deal with Under Display Camera Feature?
Smartphone manufacturers have been experimenting with various ideas and technologies in the recent years to offer a more immersive display. In order to utilise more of the screen space, phones went on from thick bezels to thin bezels and then even to bezel less displays. Furthermore, efforts to cut out the front camera hole led to the pop-up king and its likes. But, one of the most sophisticated that we have come across so far has been the ‘Under Display Camera’ feature. A smartphone with under display camera adds special low-reflective glass with high transmittance into the phone’s display. The special glass piece is usually designated a small rectangular space over the front camera placed below.The special display surface is required to allow light for the camera functioning without significantly affecting the graphics’ display either. ZTE statement noted that all the major industry players have been working on the under-display camera technology. It also mentioned emergence of various technologies such as water-drop notch display and pop-up selfie cameras for improving smartphone display. It further read, “By launching the world’s first 5G smartphone with under-display camera, ZTE will further promote the development of display technologies in the smartphone industry, thereby bringing revolutionized experiences to all consumers.”

ZTE Axon 20 5G has already grabbed the headlines for it’s under display camera but there has been limited info on its other features. From, what we know so far, the phone will offer a quad camera setup at the back. There will be a primary 64-megapixel rear camera supported by two 2-megapixel sensors and an 8-megapixel camera. Moreover, it is likely to feature a solo 32-megapixel under display front camera. Additionally, the phone will sport a 6.92-inch screen and offer an HD OLED display. As the name itself suggest, ZTE Axon 20 5G will include 5G connectivity support. Moreover, it is expected to be powered by an octa-core processor and 4120mAh battery. In terms of storage configuration, it will offer RAM up to 12GB and internal memory variants of up to 256GB. The confirmed specs would be revealed at the ZTE September 1 launch event. Moreover, it would also be interesting to see in the coming days if the phone sales will be limited to China or it would soon launch in other countries too.
