We have all been there when that tune and song is right there in our head but isn’t really getting on to our tongue. You are stuck with that song. Yet, can’t remember which one. But our problem gets solved with this new Google Search feature. Google has rolled out a new “hum your search” feature. It allows you to hum a song, sing it and even whistle the tune to find it online. The feature is now available on both Google app and Google Assistant in both Android and iOS smartphones. The new search feature will be particularly helpful in the moments you can’t recall enough of the song to get accurate results in the Google search. But, the new Google ‘hum your search’ feature is currently limited to English on iOS devices. On the other hand, it already offers support for up to 20 languages in Android based mobile phones. Google also plans to improve it further and add more languages in the future.

How does Google identify sung/hummed song tunes?

Talking of its functionality, Google uses machine learning to identify songs through the hummed tones.Krishna Kumar, Senior Product Manager, Google Search explained in its blog, “When you hum a melody into Search, our machine learning models transform the audio into a number-based sequence representing the song’s melody.” He further added that Google search models are trained to identify songs based on a variety of sources, including humans singing, whistling or humming, as well as studio recordings. He also noted that one does not need to have the perfect pitch to use this feature.
