COVID Layer – Latest Google Maps Feature

COVID layer is the name given to the latest Google Maps feature that will showcase the extent and scale of outbreak in national, state and local city areas as you zoom in and out. According to the information cited on Google’s blog post, “The feature will show a seven-day average of new Covid-19 cases per 1, 00,000 people in a particular region. It will also portray the increase or decrease in the number of cases through an arrow mark on the screen.This feature can easily be enabled by opening the maps and tapping on the ‘Layers’ button at the top-right corner of the app. The upcoming update will be rolled out in all the 220 countries which have Google Maps support and will be available by this week.” Read: Google Map New Features: Colourful& Detailed

How Does COVID Layer Work?

The latest Google Maps feature is quite easy to understand. As soon as you open the Google Maps app, you need to simply tap on the layers button on the top right hand corner your screen. Once the content is presented, click on “COVID-19 info”. The app will showcase a seven-day average of new COVID cases per 100,000 people for the particular area of the map you are looking at. It also has a label that specifies whether the cases are increasing or coming down. The feature has Color coding to help users to easily differentiate the density of new cases in an area. The latest Google Maps feature has been rolled out for all 220 countries and territories that it supports, and also presents a detailed data for state or province, county, and city, where available. “The data featured in the COVID layer comes from multiple authoritative sources, including Johns Hopkins, the New York Times, And Wikipedia”, Sujoy Banerjee Product Manager, Google Maps, said in the blog post.The aforementioned sources get data from public health organizations, including The World Health Organization, government health ministries, as well as state and local health hospitals and agencies.
